Germany - November 1940
General Heinz McMonkderian takes personal responsibility for the ill judged preliminary stage of the latest attack in the west. He blamed it on a sudden rush of blood to the head. However the move was not a complete disaster. The French force to the west of Metz is counterattacked by the Luftwaffe. 11 French Infantry Regiments and 2 Fighter Squadrons are destroyed. Guessing some of these units had come from Metz the German army decided to Recce the cities defences. Finding the city lightly guarded the Wehrmacht is ordered to assault it. 1 AA Regiment, 3 Infantry Regiments and 1 Fighter Squadron destroyed. Metz captured (17 gold plundered). 2 Infantry Regiments lost in the attack.
