The Union, September 1861
The Union wins the battle for Harpers Ferry! ![]() Thousands lay dead as the Union army marched south. A Confederate general was found among the dead and given a state funeral by federal soldiers. Rebel losses amount to 2 infantry regiments and an artillery battery. The Union has paid a 2:1 price for advancement, but the momentum of the attack was worth it. At least thats what the Northern newspapers are saying. 1 enemy militia regiment was dispersed as Union forces moved South and liberated Winchester. 2 further Confederate militia regiments were dispersed in Neutral states as they Confederates continue to try to bring them to their side. In the East a retreating Confederate army suffered heavy losses similar to those at Harpers Ferry (1 battery and 2 infantry regiments), when Union defenders of Evansville pursued their offenders to the West. Around 1000 Union men were wounded or killed. The war goes on.

The Union, October 1861
No news came from the frontlines whatsoever. This gave a chance to Union troops to rest, lick their woulds and realise the mess of the situation they are in. 10,000 of soldiers already gave their lives for causes greater than life. Still, this was the month where first signs of war weariness began to show. In October 1861, the pre-war song "Lorena" gained immense popularity with soldiers on both sides.
Lorena The years creep slowly by, Lorena, The snow is on the ground again; The sun's low down the sky, Lorena, The frost gleams where the flowers have been. But the heart throbs on as warmly now As when the summer days were nigh; Oh, the sun can never dip so low To be down affection's cloudless sky. A hundred months have passed, Lorena, Since last I held that hand in mine, And felt the pulse beat fast, Lorena, Though mine beat faster far than thine. A hundred months – 'twas flowery May, When up the hilly slope we climbed, To watch the dying of the day And hear the distant church bells chime. We loved each other then, Lorena, Far more than we ever dared to tell; And what we might have been, Lorena, Had our loving prospered well! But then, 'tis past; the years have gone, I'll not call up their shadowy forms; I'll say to them, "Lost years, sleep on, Sleep on, nor heed life's pelting storms'" The story of the past, Lorena, Alas! I care not to repeat; The hopes that could not last, Lorena, They lived, but only lived to cheat. I would not cause e'en one regret To rankle in your bosom now – "For if we try we may forget," Were words of thine long years ago. Yes, these were words of thine, Lorena – They are within my memory yet. They touched some tender chords, Lorena, Which thrill and tremble with regret. 'Twas not the woman's heart which spoke – Thy heart was always true to me; A duty stern and piercing broke The tie which linked my soul with thee. It matters little now, Lorena, The past is in the eternal past; Our hearts will soon lie low, Lorena, Life's tide is ebbing out so fast. There is a future, oh, thank God! Of life this is so small a part – 'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod. But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart. words/H.D.L. Webster (1856); music/J.P. Webster (1859) P.S. Youtube isn't working properly, here are the two links to the song.

An unnatural quiet has descended on the front lines. Surely it won't last long.

The Union, September 1861
Given the unlikelihood of the surrender of Confederate forces the war continues.
![]() The Confederates suffer heavy losses when the US Navy submits the city of Norfolk. Union ships flotilla lead by "USS Constitution" kill or disperse 5 union volonteer regiments, 3 militia formations and sink one transport found in the haven. 1 Confederate general commanding an artillery unit was also killed and given according to surviving Confederate forces. The city has been liberated and heavyly fortified against a possibe Rebel attack. Unfortunately a warship "USS Reliable" has been sunk due to the fault of its captain as he missed an underwater reef. The Union navy has also bombared the city of Morehead in revenge over the slaughter of Union troops. 1000 Confederate men killed. The Union shall be coming back. OOC: I can quite see your point about the Union Navy now McM ![]() Plus, see what I found looking for a picture for this save? (the other file)

It looks like the Federal Army has finally made its mind up to venture into Virginia. Enemy movement spotted all over the border.
